    Description

    We are looking for a highly dedicated nurse to join our Liaison Psychiatry Service at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton.

    Our team provides a comprehensive specialist service to patients in the general hospital setting including the A and E department.

    The team has been rated as an excellent service by the Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network.


    You will be expected to work a shift system across a 24hr period seven days a week, primarily assessing patients that present with mental health problems, self-harm or as a psychiatric crisis including comprehensive risk assessments.

    The role involves working autonomously carrying out mental health assessments and treatments while working closely with the team members.

    You will be expected to work as a mental health Nurse specialist within the hospital. The post involves fostering staff relationships and supporting and working closely with our physical health colleagues.

    You will also be expected to provide regular teaching to hospital staff.

    Continuous Professional Development and regular professional supervision are a priority for the Trust and you will receive regular supervision working within this role.


    As well as promoting your own professional development, we will expect you to participate in the teaching and training of nurses and other health professionals.

    Previous experience of working in Liaison Psychiatry is desirable, although not essential. We are Proud to Belong at South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust.

    ~ Promote and initiate any actions to safeguard vulnerable children and adults.

    ~ Under supervision, be responsible for the assessment of care needs of patients presenting with a wide variety of clinical conditions out of normal working hours. Following this, the post-holder will be responsible for planning and referring on for appropriate follow up where necessary.

    ~ Provide a consultation-liaison service to the ED and individual clinicians, particularly in assisting them develop emergency plans of care and make difficult decisions in cases where patients are exhibiting complex psychosocial needs and/or challenging behaviours.

    ~ Be expected to participate fully in quality assurance initiatives, with particular emphasis on a patient first approach when required.

    ~ The post-holder will act as a role model in providing a service for people with mental health problems for all staff within the ED/main hospital.

    ~ The post-holder will participate in audit/research projects associated with the work of the service when required.

    ~ The post holder represents Mental Health Trust in the general hospital setting and will play a vital role in communicating and maintaining a good working relationship between the Trusts.


    Under supervision, be required to make clear decisions, based on an analysis of complex presenting problems and judgement about available options.

    Demonstrate a high standard of record keeping and documentation with adherence to trust policy and an understanding of professional guidelines and application of confidentiality.

    ~ Work with colleagues to develop and promote the services philosophy, framework of care delivery and strategic objectives.

    ~ Work with colleagues to develop clinical expertise and high standards of nursing practice, as defined by the Nursing and Midwifery code of professional conduct

    ~ Deliver care that is evidence based, reflecting current best practice and research.

    ~ Participate in structured clinical supervision in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

    ~ Demonstrate clinical excellence and high standards of nursing practice to other staff.

    ~ Demonstrate sound understanding of the legal and ethical issues in caring for the mentally ill. In particular, demonstrating sound understanding of the Mental Health Act (1983)/Mental Capacity Act and its use in a non mental health setting.


    Demonstrate an ability to negotiate and problem solve in contentious and/or antagonistic situations where agreement is required or communicate clear decisions and rationale when agreement cannot be reached e.g.

    in situations where the Mental Health Act or Mental Capacity Act may be needed to be used.

    ~ Demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues in within the team and Liaison Psychiatry Service, and both the Mental Health and Acute Trusts.


    Represent the Mental Health Trust in the general hospital setting and will play a vital role in communicating and maintaining a good working relationship between each Trust.

    ~ Ensure the promotion of the health and safety, well-being and interests of the patients, staff and all visitors who come into contact with the team and its service environs.

    ~ At all times follow the Code of Professional Conduct NMC and ensure that all staff within their sphere of responsibility also follows the code as laid down.

    ~ Contribute to the development and implementation of Trust policy as and when required.

    Demonstrate a commitment to developing research skills in themselves and any junior staff.

    ~ Develop methods at service level to monitor standards of care in liaison with the clinical audit department (quality assurance/research).

    Under the guidance of the Team Leader, identify own professional development needs and demonstrate achievements against personal development plans.

    ~ Liaise with the College of Nursing in all matters concerning nurse training.

    Participate in the design and implementation of the audit of clinical work.

    ~ Training and Development

    To undertake mandatory and statutory training as required by Trust policy.

    ~ To contribute and commit to undertaking an annual Development Review/appraisal.

    ~ Training & Qualifications
    oRMN with current NMC registration
    oEvidence of continuing professional and personal development

    oEducated to degree or Diploma level Nursing, other courses relevant to Liaison Psychiatry e.g. CBT, Brief Solution Focussed Therapy etc.
    oDemonstrable experience of post qualifying work in psychiatry, with evidence of experience at Band 5
    oExperience of working with people who have experienced serious ongoing mental health problems
    oExperience of managing and monitoring budgets
    oExperience of implementing and monitoring standards of care
    oExperience of supervising junior staff within own and/or other disciplines

    oExperience of teaching/training in a formal or informal setting
    oExperience of working in a Liaison Psychiatry setting
