    Bedford Hospital are looking for an enthusiastic Band 6 Diabetic Specialist Midwife Lead to work within our diabetes team.

    The Deputy Diabetes Midwife will be working within the maternity diabetic service to support the management and care of women with pre-existing diabetes and gestational diabetes throughout their pregnancy and postnatal pathway.

    The post holder will support in the management of the diabetic service and and work clinically where required providing care for diabetic/high risk women in liaison with the multidisciplinary team for diabetes care in pregnancy. The post holder will take responsibility to advise staff in the acute and primary care setting in relation to Diabetes and will be actively involved in client/family education, supporting midwives, obstetricians and GP's to provide on-going antenatal care and management and care planning for clients with diabetes in the intrapartum and postnatal period.

    Main duties of the job

    Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife to join our Diabetes team. The post holder will work as part of the Diabetic Team supporting the Lead Diabetes Midwife in the safe and effective running of this service.

    Midwives are supported and enabled to practice in the optimal environments for all elements of midwifery care for all women (and their families) to enjoy a normal birth experience. You should be an experienced midwife, able to provide antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care and be able to work flexibly.

    You will provide a full range of health education, social care and advice to women, liaising with multi-disciplinary/agency groups are to continually improve maternity care for childbearing women and their families, being responsive to the needs of the women and obtain user views as appropriate. Supporting student midwives and junior members of staff as we guide them through their professional development, and receiving excellent senior midwife support to ensure you fulfil your own potential.   • The post holder will work as part of the Diabetic Team supporting the Lead Diabetes Midwife in the safe and effective running of this service.
  • Contribute to the multi-professional team in ensuring delivery of care to improve outcomes for women and their babies with diabetes.
  • Be actively involved in the education of women, midwifery support and insulin management.
  • Take responsibility for the management, education and care of diabetic women.
  • Attend combined antenatal/diabetes clinic and act a resource for women and staff throughout the maternity services
  • Provide education for other Midwives in all aspects of diabetes care during pregnancy, intra-partum and postnatal periods.
  • Act as an advocate for pregnant women with diabetes.
  • Support and development and implementation systems to improve access to specialist diabetic services for women with diabetes planning to become pregnant.
  • Be involved in monitoring and evaluating the diabetes service
  • Support the ward manager
  • Undertake the role of the midwife including decision making, using evidence based practice.
  • Facilitate the effective assessment, implementation and evaluation of midwifery care for women with diabetes and other complex medical conditions, within own sphere of clinical practice.
  • Work in the antenatal clinic setting supporting the diabetic services to support smooth running of outpatient areas
  • Support diabetic midwifery care and provide a comprehensive range of health education, psychological and social care advice to women in a hospital and community setting
  • To ensure the provision of a safe and high quality Diabetic midwifery service ensuring continuity of care in keeping with agreed pathways.
  • To work in partnership with the Lead Diabetic midwife in planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care in order to improve the health of individuals, their families and reduce health inequalities.
  • To support the development of the Diabetic service within the maternity department in partnership with the diabetes service
  • Ensuring women with pre-existing and gestational diabetes receive effective management of their diabetes via staff support and training.
  • To see and assess women with gestational diabetes upon diagnosis
  • To offer support/advice to diabetic women in person or by telephone
  • To assess the immediate needs of the newly diagnosed woman with diabetes in conjunction with the diabetes specialist nurse
  • To engage and support women and their carers' in the understanding of diabetes in order to empower them to manage their diabetes
  • To support other areas of the maternity service when the unit is in escalation.

    Qualifications

    Essential criteria

  • Registered midwife band 6 or above
  • Evidence of Degree or masters qualification
  • Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of NHS policy relating to diabetes in pregnancy
  • Previous experience in the management of diabetes in pregnancy

  • Suitable Post-Registration experience within all aspects of midwifery at band 6 or above
  • Evidence of delivering teaching health in pregnancy to women
  • Knowledge of the Diabetes pathway
