    Description

    The Role

    We are now seeking a new Design Manager to head up our busy and friendly Design Department. The successful candidate will have full responsibility for the people, procedures and processes within the Design Department. Managing, motivating and engage the Team to meet business targets and setting the example by creating a positive and respectful environment within the Team based on the Company Behaviours.

    The candidate will also be expected to undertake the following tasks:

    • Leadership and Communication:
      • Lead by setting a good example - behaviour consistent with the Amazon Behaviours and Values
      • Act as a interface between the Team and others in the business
      • Clear delivery of key messages to the team (including explanation of any goals, plans and roles)
      • Reputation management
    • Recruitment:
      • Manage recruitment with the assistance of HR
      • Ensure a successful induction process for new starters
    • Objective/Goal Setting:
      • Clearly communicate required tasks, agree deadlines, and monitor achievement
      • Set and agree SMART objectives for individuals/Team and monitor performance against these
    • Performance Management and Training:
      • Manage and conduct appraisal process with all permanent Team members
      • Provide regular constructive feedback to individuals and the team regarding their performance
      • Address performance issues quickly, candidly, and constructively
      • Manage capability and conduct issues with the assistance of HR
      • Identify training and development opportunities for the team
      • Ensure mandatory eLearning courses are completed on time
      • Absence management with Company policy; to include sickness and annual leave
      • Promote and drive continuous improvement within the Team
      • Responsibility for HSE compliance and improvement activities within the Team
    • Responsibility for the Design Team including daily task allocation and prioritisation
    • Responsibility for standard product and Make To Order (MTO) specials, including technical requirements and compliance to standard (including but not limited to PED & PESR & various design codes)
    • Liaising with Technical Manager regarding new product development prototypes and launch
    • To ensure Design activities are carried out within expected time bound parameters and levels of accuracy
    • Responsibility for Design for Manufacture
    • Responsibility for department work instructions and procedures - creating, maintaining and training
    • To work with Sales and Proposals Teams on new projects and to ensure accurate handovers to the Design Team
    • Lessons learnt project de-briefs where applicable (Kick off and Wash Up procedure)
    • Setting and achieving Team KPI's
    • Owner of appropriate Team Continuous Improvement and efficiencies (system & personnel)
    • Participate in key client reviews and meetings as required.

    The Candidate

    The successful candidate will find this an interesting and challenging position. The essential and desirable criteria for this role is:

    Essential:

    • Demonstrable experience in Design disciplines
    • A background in Manufacturing Engineering
    • Demonstrable supervisory or people management experience
    • Organisational skills - personal efficiency, time management skills and the ability to prioritise competing demands
    • Communication & interpersonal skills - leading the Team, managing diverse personalities and points of view, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate with others
    • Commercial acumen - the ability to understand company finances, resourcing and the ultimate aims of the business
    • Role modelling - able to demonstrate and lead on the values, initiatives, and culture of the organisation
    • Coaching & mentoring - comfortable in developing team members and empowering staff
    • Trust - a high level of integrity with the ability to become a

    Desirable:

    • Knowledge of vessel design & codes including PED, ASME VIII, BS EN 13445 & PD5500
    • A Degree within an engineering discipline
    • Experience of working with stainless steel & exotic alloys
    • Experience/ knowledge of Pro Engineer,Creo & Windchill
    • Experience of employee performance management
