Gas Change Manager - Warwick, United Kingdom - National Grid

    Default job background
    Description

    About the role

Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

This is an exciting opportunity to support the Head of Gas Market Strategy to work on development and implementation of a fit for purpose gas market strategy and policy development and / or supporting code modifications for the FSO.

The role can be based out of Warwick, Wokingham or Glasgow offices. We continue to offer from the office and home, support flexible working arrangements, and are open to full time and part time applicants.

    About us

Our mission is to facilitate the decarbonisation of Great Britain's energy network and ensure the delivery of reliable, affordable, and green electricity for consumers. We work with stakeholders across the whole energy industry to plan for future network needs, using insight to make sure we can balance the system today and find opportunities to transform the way it operates tomorrow.

Becoming the National Energy System Operator
In Summer of 2024, the ESO will transition to becoming the National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator will be the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain's electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users' need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation will be set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As the ESO are today, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won't just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you'll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

    About you

What we do isn't just important – it's essential. That's why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we're looking for someone who has:

    • Strong understanding of the UK Energy landscape - including deep expertise in Gas markets (i.e., codes, market forces, trends, industry players, regulation).

    • Experience of formulating strategic initiatives and policies.

    What you'll get

A competitive salary between £54000 – £72000 dependent on experience and capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance, 28 days annual leave as standard, and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

You will also have access to a comprehensive benefits package tailored to support your well-being and professional success. From a competitive salary to flexible work arrangements, we promote your work-life balance. Enjoy fit for purpose wellbeing and lifestyle offerings, ongoing skill development aligned to our Purpose and Values, and be part of a supportive community that values your individuality and where you can belong.

    Key Accountabilities

In this prestigious role, you will get to represent the business in key industry meetings, engaging and influencing key market players, providing thought leadership and being a trusted adviser to ensure positive outcomes for our UNC modifications, and influence those raised by 3rd parties.

    • Support in the analysis of market trends and dynamics (including evaluating social, political, technological, economic and environmental insights) in order to develop a long-term Gas markets strategy for the FSO.

    • Contribute to and influence policy development related to the Gas market in the UK, inputting into the vision and high-level model to ensure policy change in the UK and EU is in view of the whole energy picture and aligned to the FSO's brief, the energy transition, and the attainment of Net Zero.

    • Support large, complex, and multi-faceted initiatives and programmes on behalf of the FSO, mobilising and leading the relevant resources across the FSO (and externally) in order to ensure the market makes the most appropriate choices related to Gas.

    • As required conduct detailed analysis / collate policy positions to inform the FSO's senior leadership, market players, Ofgem, etc., in respect of the UK's Gas market - this includes supporting the Head of Gas Market Strategy in the provision of regular market updates, identifying key trends and drivers, and presenting analysis that supports strategic decision-making.

    • Translate energy insights delivered through forecasts and scenario modelling into a compelling long-term view of how and where the FSO influences in a changing Gas landscape.

    • Lead a team of Policy Development Officers, Development Officers, and Market Strategy Leads to ensure the development and implementation of a fit for purpose Gas Market Strategy for the FSO - this includes defining the portfolio of initiatives to pursue, defining resource allocation, building team capability and role modelling ways of working.

    • Drive and coordinate UNC modifications, working with stakeholders to implement changes that deliver consumer value and take GB closer to Net Zero.

    What you'll need

    • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills - ability to communicate effectively up to the most senior levels of the organisation and with external bodies, partners, and regulators.

    • To be a Strategic Thinker, excellent problem-solving skills and influencing different business areas and management levels.

    • To demonstrate the ability to assemble complex ideas, issues and observations into clear and simple explanations.
