    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Band 7 Unit Manager for C9 Acute Respiratory Unit and SDEC at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. C9 is one of the new wards in the Louisa Martindale Building which offers state of the art facilities and fantastic views.

    The ward has 28 beds including an 8 bed acute area which is where patients requiring higher levels of care are looked after such as Non-Invasive Ventilation, chest drains and a higher frequency of observations. The Unit Manager will be part of the team involved in setting up the new Respiratory SDEC which is also located on C9.

    We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to lead a team dedicated to delivering person centred care with compassion and a commitment to meet the varied needs of our respiratory patients. We require individuals who are forward thinking, well organised and with a positive attitude towards flexibility and change.

    We are offering this position as a permanent opportunity however we are happy to consider a 1 year secondment opportunity for the right individual.

    Main duties of the job

  • The successful candidate will be a role model to staff, exhibiting professionalism and integrity to maintain an inclusive working environment.
  • A strong interest in developing staff and a proactive approach to delivery of high standards of evidence based care are essential to this post.
  • The successful candidate will be a visible leader, providing coaching to the nursing team on a daily basis; coordinating the delivery of person centred care to our respiratory patients within the clinical environment.
  • By having excellent clinical and interpersonal skills the successful candidate will ensure that patients and relatives are kept informed and that flow is supported in regard to admissions, transfers and discharges to multiple destinations, often liaising with external teams/facilities.
  • The successful candidate will support a collaborative, open and honest communication style across all groups of people whether that be staff, patients, relatives or visiting teams.
  • The successful candidate will work alongside staff as a role model and mentor. With exemplary leadership skills and adherence to Trust values, the successful candidate will ensure that the ward actively participates in continuous improvement and education both professionally and personally.
  • The successful candidate will champion Trust policies and protocols. They will engage in clinical audits to ensure safe practice within the ward environment.

    Job responsibilities

  • Provide professional leadership with responsibility for performance and the day to day running of the ward and SDEC
  • Be able to develop, motivate, innovate and lead a team
  • Demonstrate a logical, flexible and innovative approach to problem solving.
  • To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating specialist knowledge, skills and expertise within respiratory medicine and within the context of changing health care provision.
  • Ensure that a supportive teaching and learning environment is in place.
  • Ensure that all staff are working to their required level of clinical and professional competence whilst adhering to their NMC professional code of conduct. Ensuring that all staff are developed to attain competence as highlighted at appraisal.
  • Actively audit and proactively manage care against audits, incidents, high impact interventions, complaints and benchmarking.
  • Ensure that all clinical environments reflect infection control standards of cleanliness, be proactive in response to any issues raised through cleaning audits, infection control audits or patient environment inspections.
  • Ensure high levels of patient satisfaction; ensure that any required actions are reported back to the matron from patient questionnaires and implemented where applicable.
  • When required, deal with patient complaints proactively to minimise the risk of them becoming formal. Appropriately investigate complaints in a timely manner, and provide response as required. Prepare and evaluate staffing rosters, adjust accordingly to provide cover with the required skill mix making best use of resources available. Minimise the use of bank and agency staff by relocation of staff as needed to cover the rota effectively.
  • In conjunction with the matron assist with appointing staff to your area in line with the recruitment policy and budget allocation.
  • Report/ action any accidents, incidence or undue occurrences reported to you or witnessed by you in line with Trust policy. Ensure the timely management of incidence allocated to you for investigation on Datix. Ensure proactive investigation of any clinical incidence, undertaking root cause analysis if indicated, ensuring action plans are developed as needed.
  • To have the responsibility for risk management and health and safety in the workplace, by being proactive in raising risks with the matron, general manager and divisional management team and ensuring adequate controls are in place to manage these risks.
  • Ensure staff sickness in your team is managed proactively within Trust policy.
