    Ward/ Unit Manager - Brighton, East Sussex, United Kingdom - University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

    Description

    An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Band 7 Unit Manager for C9 Acute Respiratory Unit and SDEC at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

    C9 is one of the new wards in the Louisa Martindale Building which offers state of the art facilities and fantastic views.


    The ward has 28 beds including an 8 bed acute area which is where patients requiring higher levels of care are looked after such as Non-Invasive Ventilation, chest drains and a higher frequency of observations.

    The Unit Manager will be part of the team involved in setting up the new Respiratory SDEC which is also located on C9.


    We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to lead a team dedicated to delivering person centred care with compassion and a commitment to meet the varied needs of our respiratory patients.

    We are offering this position as a permanent opportunity however we are happy to consider a 1 year secondment opportunity for the right individual.

    A strong interest in developing staff and a proactive approach to delivery of high standards of evidence based care are essential to this post.

    The successful candidate will be a visible leader, providing coaching to the nursing team on a daily basis coordinating the delivery of person centred care to our respiratory patients within the clinical environment.

    By having excellent clinical and interpersonal skills the successful candidate will ensure that patients and relatives are kept informed and that flow is supported in regard to admissions, transfers and discharges to multiple destinations, often liaising with external teams/facilities.

    The successful candidate will champion Trust policies and protocols.

    Demonstrate a logical, flexible and innovative approach to problem solving.

    To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating specialist knowledge, skills and expertise within respiratory medicine and within the context of changing health care provision.

    Ensure that all staff are working to their required level of clinical and professional competence whilst adhering to their NMC professional code of conduct.

    Actively audit and proactively manage care against audits, incidents, high impact interventions, complaints and benchmarking.
    When required, deal with patient complaints proactively to minimise the risk of them becoming formal. Appropriately investigate complaints in a timely manner, and provide response as required. Minimise the use of bank and agency staff by relocation of staff as needed to cover the rota effectively.

    In conjunction with the matron assist with appointing staff to your area in line with the recruitment policy and budget allocation.

    Report/ action any accidents, incidence or undue occurrences reported to you or witnessed by you in line with Trust policy.

    Ensure the timely management of incidence allocated to you for investigation on Datix.

    Ensure proactive investigation of any clinical incidence, undertaking root cause analysis if indicated, ensuring action plans are developed as needed.

    To have the responsibility for risk management and health and safety in the workplace, by being proactive in raising risks with the matron, general manager and divisional management team and ensuring adequate controls are in place to manage these risks.

    Ensure staff sickness in your team is managed proactively within Trust policy.

    NMC Registered Nurse
    Substantial experience as a Band 6/7 in Respiratory or Acute Care
    Respiratory or Acute Care Module
    PFIS/quality improvement training
    Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
    Evidence of having championed diversity in previous roles (as appropriate to role).
