    Default job background
    Description

About the Institute for Nonprofit Practice

Founded in Boston in 2007 by Barry Dym, Ph.D., the Institute for Nonprofit Practice (INP, also formerly the Institute for Nonprofit Management and Leadership) was created to equip nonprofit executives and middle managers with the skills needed to strengthen their organizations. In its first decade, INP graduated 1,200+ students, over half of whom are people of color.

The Institute for Nonprofit Practice pursues its mission to transform communities by equipping diverse classes of nonprofit leaders with the skills, networks, confidence and credibility they need to boldly advance their careers and be a force for change in their organizations and communities. The Institute accomplishes its mission through two distinct full year certificate programs and an ever growing set of additional learning experiences for executives, managers and high-potential emerging leaders in the nonprofit sector.

Behind INP's rigorous programming to develop leaders is an organizational culture that is thoughtful and attentive to its staff. Outstanding benefits, flexible work locations and a strong sense of community and values are key aspects of what makes INP unique. An intentional and wide-reaching focus on diversity, equity and inclusion is core to INP's mission and is part of every aspect of the organization's work.

After a decade of success expanding across New England, INP is looking ahead to the next chapter of growth and aims to broaden its impact by launching programming in New York City. With programs starting in January 2020, INP is enthusiastic about building a new hub that will work in close partnership with the New England location.

The Institute for Nonprofit Practice is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader with deep experience in the New York nonprofit ecosystem to be the local face of the organization and to ensure the model is delivered with impact and excellence across the city. The Executive Director role is a full-time position based in New York City.

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President & Chief Growth Officer and working closely with the President and CEO and a growing leadership team, the successful candidate will play a critical role in building a sustainable, effective organization, including developing and executing an expansion strategy to serve hundreds of students per year and building a vibrant alumni network of some of the brightest established and emerging leaders in the nonprofit sector. This is a unique opportunity to join a vibrant organization and replicate a proven model serving the largest nonprofit workforce in the country.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Leadership and Management

    • Recruit, manage and develop a diverse, high-performing regional team comprised of 2-3 full-time staff and a larger set of 6-10 high-profile, nonprofit leaders serving as part-time faculty members.
    • Ensure there is ongoing excellence across all regional office functions – program operations, evaluation, finance and administration, fundraising and communications.
    • Engage and energize students, faculty, funders and partners through inspiring communications and timely systems of support.
    • Hire and manage a regional New York Associate Director, supporting their execution of student recruitment, program operations and alumni engagement work.

    Fundraising and Communications

    • Double local revenue generation over three years from a budget of ~$1M.
    • Partner with INP's President & CEO and Development Teams to help raise NYC growth capital funds to support rapid scale up of program offerings in the city.
    • Refine and localize INP communications materials and strategies—from web presence to external relations—with the goal of creating a strong brand presence in the city.
    • Build an exemplary reputation for INP among key leaders and funders and across a broad array of social sector influencers.

    Regional Strategic Planning and Expansion

    • Partner with the EVP & Chief Growth Officer and President & CEO to design and execute INP's New York regional expansion strategy.
    • Build mutually beneficial partnerships with funders and strong relationships with political and community leaders to support expansion efforts.
    • Act as an external presence publishing and communicating local program results with an emphasis on regional and national replication.

    Candidate Profile

The Executive Director - New York will be a " leader among leaders " with a strong local reputation in the nonprofit sector and a significant track record of success and experience in fundraising, leadership and management. The ideal candidate will be a creative, collaborative and action-oriented leader with a compelling presence and exceptional communication and relationship-building skills.

While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position , the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

    • Authentic passion for INP's mission and strong experience in the talent development and racial and gender equity space.
    • Strategic leader with 10 years+ of nonprofit/business management and track record of fundraising success.
    • Skilled at building learning communities and networks, facilitating without direct authority and developing a powerful sense of shared purpose in others; demonstrated ability to effectively engage and enlist a wide range of stakeholders and supporters.
    • Excellence in performance management with the ability to coach and manage staff, develop diverse, high-performing teams, set and achieve strategic objectives and engender deep belief in a shared vision.
    • Demonstrated experience having either launched a successful, high-profile initiative or taken an organization to the next stage of growth or excellence.
    • An unwavering commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a strong dedication to INP's values of social justice, generosity and integrity.
    • Ability to lead with influence and inspiration and collaborate effectively with diverse groups of people from a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds.
    • A flexible and adaptive work style with the ability to thrive in a growing, entrepreneurial, mission-driven environment.
    • Strong public presence with compelling written and oral presentation skills.

Competitive benefit package and salary commensurate with experience: salary range $130,000 - $160,000.
