    Main responsibilities:

    The Security Operations Manager will:

  • To provide day to day management for the University's operational security, and occasionally, reception teams, ensuring that all staff provide a professional, efficient, and approachable security and reception service and deliver high standards of customer service to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Work with senior management to achieve the Universities goals and objectives.
  • Use your previous skills and experience to enhance the department, and bring further knowledge, new ideas and 'best practice' to the team.
  • You will be expected to provide day to day management for the University's operational security teams across numerous University sites and buildings, ensuring our staff provide a professional, efficient, and approachable security service.
  • You will manage your own core team of staff, and also the wider duty team across the team shift pattern, 365 days a year.
  • You will be expected to react to security and emergency-type situations, but also take a proactive approach in preventing them occurring in the first instance, all across the University.
  • Provide clear advice, guidance, and instruction on all security matters.
  • Liaise with students, staff, visitors, external agencies, and any members of the public in a professional, friendly, and courteous manner at all times, being assertive when necessary.
  • Ensuring that security teams work effectively together, and also with colleagues in the Faculties and other professional services.
  • Dealing with all manner of staff issues and enquiries whilst under line management protocols.
  • Good communications (written and verbal), particularly interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to maintain accurate written and electronic records.
  • The writing of clear and concise reports which may be required for legal proceedings.
  • Utilising a good working knowledge of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE 1984, and Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (SoCPA 2005)
  • A good working knowledge of the Data Protection Act 2018, GDPR, Human Rights Act 1998, and the Right to Privacy Acts.
  • A good working knowledge of Prevent, Protect, Prepare and any other Home Office legislation, all pertaining to safety and security within the Higher Education sector.
  • Key requirements:

  • A good standard of general education.
  • Vocational qualifications relating to security matters, such as an NVQ in Security Operations / ILM Level 3 in Leadership Management.
  • A Security Industry Authority (SIA) 'Security Guarding' / 'Door Supervision' licence.
  • 5 years significant and relatable experience of security work, including tangible experience of supervising and managing large numbers of staff and different teams.
  • Good communication skills including the ability to train, coach and give clear guidance and instructions to staff.
  • Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office.
  • Experience of using technical systems such as CCTV and access control systems.
  • Able to work on their own initiative and utilise common sense and sound judgement.
  • The successful candidate will have:

  • Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) Licence.
  • Experience of controlling CCTV systems.
  • First Aid at Work qualification.
  • 'Train the Trainer' (or similar) qualification.
  • Training in Conflict Management and Physical Intervention.
  • Experience of investigating and resolving incidents.
  • Experience of a security role in an educational establishment.
