    Occupational Therapy Clinical Lead

    Band 7, Hospital Division

    Full time - permanent


    We are looking for an enthusiastic and capable Band 7 Occupational Therapist with experience in inpatient mental health settings to work across our acute wards and provide leadership for the hospital division.


    The Hospital Division comprises of inpatient wards for working age adults who require acute treatment or rehabilitation and wards which specialise in the care of older adults.


    They will be responsible for day-to-day delivery and management of the OT and AHP input into our acute wards and will have excellent planning and organisational skills including the ability to prioritise effectively.

    They will take a lead on maintaining quality and effectiveness and identifying opportunities for development.

    The post holder will lead in the provision of a pathway of engagement including ward-based activity, a focussed off ward therapy programme and support to access and link in with community resources.

    The postholder will be responsible for the planning, development and evaluation of the Occupational and Arts' Therapies and Activity Worker input to ensure the provision of effective services to the Hospital Division Mental Health Service Line.

    To manage and supervise Occupational Therapists (OT) and Arts' Therapists, (AT), support workers and Activity Workers for the PICU.

    To contribute to service development in collaboration with Head Occupational Therapist (Hospital Division).

    Camden & Islington Mental Health NHS Trust and the London Boroughs of Camden and Islington are working in partnership to provide Mental Health Services.

    Employees from all the participating organisations work closely together and have joint management and supervision arrangements.

    You may therefore be managed by a manager who is not employed by Camden & Islington Mental Health NHS Trust.

    To select and undertake occupational therapy assessments for designated patients, addressing occupational and skill deficits. This may include ADL, work, leisure, community skills and home visit assessments.

    ~ To plan and carry out occupational therapy interventions both on the ward and in the department using graded and meaningful activities to meet patients needs and achieve their goals.

    ~ To act as a resource for advice to other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding group work, group activities and physical disability matters, including adapting the environment.

    ~ To apply a broad level of understanding of disability and mental health problems and recommend lifestyle changes or adaptations to patients social or physical environments.

    ~ To adhere to RCOT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and local and national standards of practice.

    ~ to lead on clinical improvement and quality improvement within OT for the hospital division

    2 Administration and Management

    ~ To support the co-ordination, evaluation and development of the Occupational and Arts Therapy service provided by this inpatient team with the other clinical lead OTs.

    ~ To ensure that the Occupational and Arts Therapies programme of therapeutic activities for PICU, evolves to meet service needs appropriately.

    ~ To line manage and recruit inpatient occupational and arts therapies staff if or the OT in-patient team. And to be involved in the recruitment of other OTs and ATs to other services in the service line as required.

    ~ To co-ordinate the day-to-day activities and clinical work of AHP staff on the PICU.

    ~ To ensure that all staff in the team maintain up-to-date written and electronic records and activity data in accordance with professional (HCPC and RCOT) and Trust standards

    ~ To apply and manage HR policy and procedure in relation to grievance, disciplinary, absence management and recruitment as needed.

    ~ To work with other Lead Clinicians and senior staff on tasks delegated by the Operational Director to ensure effective day to day management of the inpatient unit.

    ~ In conjunction with the Head of OT and Arts Therapies to contribute to operational planning and service development, leading on delegated professional projects.

    ~ To work with the Trust Head and Lead Therapists group to develop the Trust wide occupational therapy service and maintain professional standards, including HPC Registration for all qualified staff.

    ~ To contribute to the development and implementation of Trust strategies and

    policies as appropriate.


    To provide or ensure regular clinical and professional supervision for inpatient occupational and arts therapy staff, activity workers and support workers.

    ~ To support newly qualified staff through the preceptorship process

    ~ To ensure that all OTs and ATs in the hospital division have access to professional supervision.

    ~ To ensure that all team staff have annual appraisal in line with the Trust policy and guidance.


    To communicate effectively with service users, team members, carers, and other agencies, including taking an active role in developing links with community resources.

    ~ To participate in all relevant clinical meetings regarding multi-disciplinary care planning.

    ~ To maintain up to date clinical records and occupational therapy reports in multi-disciplinary electronic notes in line with trust policies and professional standards

    ~ To participate in occupational therapy meetings and lead delegated meetings.

    ~ To attend senior and management meeting as required to cascade information from management or Head OT, Associate Director or Associate Clinical Director to staff or from staff to management.

    ~ To promote the contribution of occupational therapy and arts therapy within the hospital division and represent Occupational Therapy in meetings as appropriate

    5 Training Staff and Students

    ~ To participate in the induction and training of staff and students of all disciplines in this setting.

    ~ To provide clinical placements, supervision and training for occupational therapy students in the unit in line with the Trust standards and procedures.

    ~ To supervise and assess occupational therapy students on practice placement.

    ~ To identify and monitor staff training needs and create an environment of reflective practice.

    ~ 6 Professional Development

    ~ To be responsible for ongoing professional development through internal and external development opportunities.

    ~ To attend and contribute to the mental health occupational therapy Continuing Professional Development meetings

    ~ To demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in internal and external development opportunities, recording learning outcomes in a portfolio


    To lead and participate in evaluation, audit and practice development activities within occupational therapy and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

    ~ To work with other staff on the implementation of national guidelines for practice.

    ~ To take an active part in the planning and development of clinical service delivery and care pathways for the Service Line, including decision-making and policy development.

    ~ To comply with the College of Occupational Therapists Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and local and national policies and procedures
