    Job summary

    Are you interested in working in the acute paediatric setting? We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly skilled Band 7 Specialist SLT to join us within the Paediatric SLT team at Leeds Childrens Hospital. An opportunity has arisen to develop the SLT role within the Neurosciences team, encompassing inpatient neuro / rehab and the neuromuscular service. This post will provide an excellent opportunity to develop skills as a core team member with a focus on neurology and service development in this area.     Main duties of the job

    To fulfil the role you will be experienced at an advanced level, demonstrating highly developed skills in assessment, instrumental evaluation, differential diagnosis, treatment & management of Feeding, Swallowing and Communication difficulties. You will manage complex dysphagia working closely with patients, families and MDT ensuring high quality care. This may include tracheostomy management and use of VFSS. Excellent communication skills, organisation, team working and the ability to show evidence of CPD are required. You will carry a complex clinical caseload focusing on neurology, helping coordinate service development, training, assessments/treatments and transfer of care. Governance is key to this role with expectations to undertake audits, collate clinical outcomes and participate in quality forums to improve quality, safety and productivity. You will have experience in providing teaching, mentoring, clinical supervision and supporting competencies.

    Our Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy team provide hospital based services for children with complex communication and/or swallowing difficulties linked to a variety of acute & chronic conditions across a broad range of medical specialities at local & regional level. This role will also include working with SLT colleagues across these areas. This post provides excellent opportunities to develop skills as a core member of a well-established MDT. The post holder will join a highly supportive & innovative wider SLT Service.     2. JOB PURPOSE

    To assess differentially diagnose and manage complex communication and swallowing breakdown relating to a wide range of conditions. Utilise highly specialist knowledge in line with local policies/protocols and professional guidelines. Provide specialist second opinions on request to other health and social care professionals. Build links with allied agencies across primary and secondary care improving local and regional care pathways across in/outpatient settings.

    Diagnose, assess, treat and manage complex communication, swallowing, cognitive and emotional impairments. Ensure all patients have opportunities to improve their swallowing/communication function and decrease reliance on enteral feeds and communication aids.

    Develop a rehabilitation care pathway focussing on education, enablement and empowerment of service users and their carers

    3. JOB DIMENSIONS

    The post holder will:

    Manage Highly Specialist caseloads ensuring their complex communication and swallowing needs are met safely

    Provide seamless pathway of care with locality services ensuring equitable citywide provision.

    Manage local and regional complex caseloads.

    Plan, coordinate and deliver medical education and training programs for health/social staff, patients, care providers, regional SLTs and students

    Act as patient advocate facilitating communication in order to secure compliance with Mental Capacity Act

    Audit caseloads and provision to measure value of input across this care pathway and evaluate alternative models of provision

    Optimise service provision by balancing provision between specialist Acute and Outpatient clinics

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree accredited by RCSLT
  • Health Professions Council Licence to practice as a Speech & Language Therapist
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
  • Advanced level dysphagia training
  • Post Graduate training in Paediatric Dysphagia
  • Desirable

  • Specialist knowledge of relevant client groups
  • In-depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions and evidence of highly specialist clinical expertise relevant to the specialism
  • Well established knowledge of RCSLT Professional and Clinical Guidelines/policies both locally and nationally in the specialism as well as relevant national strategy and drivers
  • Substantial SLT experience post qualification with significant experience of assessment, diagnosis, treatment & management of neonates and older children
  • Experience working at advanced level in the assessment, differential diagnosis and management of the specialism
  • Experience in teaching competencies to less experienced Speech & Language Therapists
  • Experience in the provision of second opinions and advice to internal and external professional colleagues
  • Experience in delivering Communication and Swallowing training to SLT colleagues and other members of the MDT
  • Experience of conduction clinical audit
  • Able to manage the emotional consequences of patients with a range of feeding and communication disorders
