    Description

Home / Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

    Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

We are in search of a commercially-minded, values-driven and visionary Chief Executive Officer to spearhead the charity into its next phase of growth.

"I first visited Phoenix over 30 years ago as my place to be after a busy day at work, to decompress, be stimulated by the programme, fed, watered, meet friends and get recharged.

I became Chair of Phoenix in 2019 and am touched to listen to other people's stories about what Phoenix means to them. I am also very proud of our recent capital build and all that it enables us to deliver now and in the future through our film and art programmes, meeting rooms for learning and conferences, plus the Café Bar and rooftop terrace. It is heart-warming to have customers filling the venue after a prolonged period of absence on account of the pandemic and building disruption.

After 13 years as CEO, John Rance has announced his retirement and I must express the huge amount of gratitude and respect from the trustees, stakeholders and staff for all he has achieved for Phoenix in growing the organisation to a point where we needed a bigger venue, and then delivering that to a high standard, and through trickier times.

We now have a rare opportunity for a new CEO who understands the value of culture and arts to the health and wellbeing of a city, for the social and economic benefits it has to a city and on a personal level to our customers – whether they come to see a film, enjoy the art programme, or meet in the Café Bar.

Phoenix is in the vibrant city of Leicester which is well known for its cultural and creative diversity. Working with stakeholders, current and future funders and local businesses is crucial to this role, as is the growth of customers and hires for hospitality.

The incoming CEO will undoubtedly face financial challenges with rising operational costs and diminishing public sector support. This was recognised by Phoenix many years ago and was the driver for our capital expansion project. This is an opportunity to work with the team and trustees to grow audiences, customers and business for the future of Phoenix, building on its existing reputation and the legacy of our retiring CEO.

We look forward to hearing from you."

We are in search of a commercially-minded, values-driven and visionary Chief Executive Officer to spearhead the charity into its next phase of growth. The CEO will play a pivotal role in providing strategic leadership, ensuring organisational sustainability, and championing the delivery of high-quality arts and community initiatives. This leadership position is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Leicester, shaping the future of Phoenix's impact on the community, and putting this exciting charity firmly on the national map.

Phoenix is a vibrant organisation in Leicester dedicated to enriching the city's cultural and social tapestry. Committed to fostering creativity, inclusivity, and robust community engagement, Phoenix delivers a diverse array of artistic and educational programmes centred on film, art, and digital culture.

The charity has recently completed a major capital redevelopment project, and now features four cinema screens, a digital art gallery, a brand-new restaurant / café space and fantastic event / conference spaces. The potential is huge, but we also face significant sector challenges such as rebuilding our audiences to pre-pandemic levels, restricted funding from local and national arts and culture partners, and reaching all sections of Leicester's diverse community to ensure our audience reflects our city. This makes it a really exciting time to join as our CEO, as there is huge scope to set the defining vision for Phoenix.

We want to hear from you if you have:

    • Proven and recent experience in strategic leadership at an organisation of comparable scale and complexity.
    • Proven ability to develop and communicate organisational strategy and vision, providing clear direction for all stakeholders.
    • Entrepreneurial mindset with the demonstrable ability to identify emerging trends and opportunities, bring in new income, and build partnerships for tangible organisational development and growth.
    • Experience in leading organisations or major programmes with multiple stakeholders, building and maintaining relationships to achieve organisational goals.
    • Track record of working with diverse populations, showcasing understanding and a commitment to inclusivity.
    • Experience of working effectively with non-executives.
    • Substantial experience in initiating and managing significant organisational change.
    • Demonstrable leadership in managing staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment, and a successful track record of building and inspiring highly effective teams, particularly in complex situations.
