    The Katharine Dormandy Haemophilia Centre & Thrombosis Unit is a specialist comprehensive care centre for haemophilia and related disorders and a service for thrombotic conditions including anticoagulation management.

    We are looking for a clinical nurse specialist for haemophilia who will practice at an advanced level in the delivery of high quality care.

    Working with a multidisciplinary specialist team, the person we are looking for will be an experienced nurse who is able to enhance the advancement of practice in the care of individuals and families affected by haemophilia and related inherited bleeding disorders.

    Ideally you will have experience in this field but we would consider an applicant with a high level of expertise in another area who could respond to intensive education.

    Your experience might include work at clinical nurse specialist level and/or work with chronic health conditions.

    The work setting will be mainly out-patient and day-care within the Centre from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, along with some continuing specialist nursing care for in-patients.

    Following training and competency assessment the postholder will also join a rotation for Saturdays, holding a bleep from 9am to 12:45 providing specialist haemophilia support for in-patients and A&E attenders.

    Lead Nurse for Haemophilia & Haematology

    The post involves the provision of expert assessment and management of care for patients with haemophilia and related inherited bleeding disorders and their families.

    Working with adolescents and adults, the postholder will manage a nursing caseload within the day care setting of the Haemophilia Centre and continuing into the community.

    They will have a community liaison and outreach role within the multidisciplinary team in educating and supporting families post diagnosis and at different life-stages and in supporting management of episodes of care in other healthcare settings such as district general hospitals and specialised surgical units.

    They will act as a source of specialised advice and information for hospital-based staff and primary health care personnel on a regional basis.

    The postholder will also be responsible for the supervision and training of junior staff and in the absence of the Lead Nurse, for the nursing management of the Centre.

    • To provide an expert nursing service within the specialty by receiving direct referrals and using an advanced level of holistic planning, decision-making, implementation and evaluation of care.

    To ensure a continuity of care that is extended to patients in their home This may include home, school and workplace visits.

    To act in a consultancy role where patients are admitted to other healthcare facilities for an episode of care, e.g a specialised surgical unit.

    To ensure all clinical and administrative policies are adhered to.
    To provide care for patients with complex physiological and psychological needs.
    To contribute to the genetic counselling work of the multidisciplinary team.
    To document all care given using the Trust guidelines.
    To act as a role model in nursing care to other nurses within the team.

    To audit and review existing protocols and develop further guidelines / protocols at a local and national level in conjunction with the Lead Nurse.

    To liaise with all key members of the multidisciplinary team to advise and support colleagues in the delivery of specialised patient care across professional boundaries.

    To undertake haemophilia nurse led clinics and to be responsible for excellent standards of nursing care to patients through the planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating nurse-led clinics .

    To work autonomously to deliver specialist haemophilia clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patients group and based on principles that are research based and which enhance the quality of patient care.

    To contribute to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for patients with haemophilia and other bleeding conditions.

    To contribute to training and education within haemophilia specialist areas , as well as inpatient ward, A&E other community services

    To promote an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through reviewing the evidence base and embedding this in practice through engagement in audits.

    Substantial post-registration experience in a Haematology
    Undertaken nurse led clinics
    Evidence of teaching junior members of staff
    Knowledge of current advances and pathways of care relevant to specialty
    Skilled in use of computer/keyboard
    Ability to motivate staff and improve individuals and team performance
    Getting vaccinated, and getting a booster, remains the best defence against COVID-19.
