    Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Ophthalmology - London, United Kingdom - Great Ormond Street Hospital

    Job overview

    We are recruiting a fixed term, one-year, Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Ophthalmology (ST6+) to join us at Great Ormond Street Hospital. As a fellow you will have 6 outpatient clinics, 1 or 2 theatre sessions, 1/2 non-clinical sessions and 1 or 2 ward referral sessions per week.

    Theatre sessions will provide you with experience assisting at complex procedures including corneal grafting, glaucoma, infant lens implantation and oculoplastic procedures and, depending upon your previous surgical experience and skills, you will undertake paediatric cataract and strabismus surgery under consultant supervision.

    You will be expected to arrange, with the support of clinician's assistant and clinical nurse specialist, the operating list & perform medical clerking and admission. You will be responsible for seeing the patients post operatively after theatre on the day and the next morning and prescribing their medications and writing a discharge summary.

    Main duties of the job

    There are 3 full-time clinical fellows at Great Ormond Street and one part time fellow. Each fellow spends four months on each of the three clinical teams.

    Each fellow has 6 outpatient clinics, 1 or 2 theatre sessions, 1/2 non-clinical sessions and 1 or 2 ward referral sessions per week.

    Academic/Professional qualification/Training

    Essential criteria

    • Primary medical qualification - MBBS or equivalent
    • Full GMC registration (obtained by designated start date)
    • MRCP, MRCPCH, MRCOphth, FRCOphth or equivalent
    • Research publications

    • Higher degree – MSc, MPhil related discipline

    Skills and abilities

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills

    • Extensive knowledge of paediatric Ophthalmology
    • Able to be senior oncall for paediatric ophthalmology

    • Ability to establish and maintain working relations with patients, carers, and multi-disciplinary colleagues
    • Good interpersonal skills

    Experience/Knowledge

    Essential criteria

    • Experience of teaching and presenting
    • Experience of audit activities
    • Understanding of principles of clinical governance
    • Senior on-call for paediatric and adult ophthalmology Retinoblastoma care
    • Good clinical judgement and a high degree of surgical skills
    • Self-motivation, evidenced by self-started clinical and research work
    • Computer literacy
    • Involvement in the Clinical audit process
    • Understanding & proven ability to apply research findings in a clinical/ organisational context
    • Experience in ROP screening
    • Minimum of 100 cataracts and 10 squint surgeries as lead surgeon
    • A minimum of four years specialist training in ophthalmology in full time hospital service

    Desirable criteria

    • Clinical experience in related paediatric specialties
    • Published research in peer reviewed journals
