    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, proactive Childrens Nurse with a background and experience in Epilepsy to lead our Childrens Epilepsy Nursing service. The service support both secondary and tertiary epilepsy and the VNS patients.

    We are looking to recruit an individual with excellent partnership, networking and communication skills who has clinical and some operational management experience, strong leadership skills that can motivate individuals and teams to build and sustain change.

    Excellent organisational and communication skills are key elements for this position together with a genuine compassion and commitment to care for children who have epilepsy and their families.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder will be responsible for the day to day clinical and professional leadership/ management of the Children's secondary and tertiary Epilepsy Nurse specialists to ensure safe and effective care delivery. Overseeing the effective and efficient use of skills and resources to ensure the team and the service is organised to meet the needs of the patients and their families.

    The post holder will act as a role model for the team in terms of clinical and quality standards, providing clinical leadership and support to all team members.

    The post holder will provide nursing expertise, undertaking assessment and provide education and support to patients and their parents and to other health professionals. A non-medical prescribing qualification (or willingness to obtain) is integral for the role. The post holder will be involved in, clinical audit and service development.

    The post holder will work closely with both Childrens Neurology Consultants, Secondary Epilepsy Paediatricians, Neurosurgeons and Community paediatricians to provide responsive and supportive services for children who have had a diagnosis of epilepsy.

    Support will be provided by the matron, which includes preceptorship period, regular 1:1 meetings, team meetings, and appraisal for the upcoming year.

    2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

    The post holder will be practising as an independent specialist clinical practitioner providing patient-centred and evidence-based clinical care, within an agreed scope of competence and practice. The jobholder is responsible for the management of a defined caseload. The jobholder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care.

    The jobholder will provide specialist nursing care, treatment and advice to a specific patient group and will contribute to the development of the speciality service. The jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources. The job holder will support the development of interdisciplinary and whole service working. As a role model they will promote the sharing of good practice and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient care. The job holder will provide training and education to staff groups, patients and families/carers.

    The post holder will work in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to implement and improve the patient pathway and will be expected to develop new skills to further enhance the quality of the service delivered. Where appropriate, the role will include the day to day leadership and management.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Registered Nurse (Children's)
  • First Level Degree of equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Recognised teaching/assessing qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience of teaching and assessment
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Post registration qualification in specialty or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Desirable

  • Master Level Degree Education or equivalent experience
  • Extended/Supplementary Prescribing
  • Other criteria

  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own and other's workload
  • Skills and knowledge required to lead and develop team members.
  • Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary), including clearance on blood borne viruses in compliance with Trust Policy
  • Ability to travel in between Trust premises and patient homes for posts that involve community visits.
