    Professor/Reader/Senior Clinical Lecturer in Controlled Human Infection Models (CHIM)

    We are looking for a passionate infectious diseases consultant clinician with research experience in controlled human infection (CHIM) and human challenge studies.

    Identifying research opportunities and funding and developing research partnerships in low- and middle-income countries and poorest areas of UK will be key aspects of the academic role.

    The post holder will provide research leadership in CHIM including line management/supervision of more junior clinical research staff at LSTM and will work in close collaboration with the Professor of Immunology who is Head of the Liverpool Vaccine Group.

    Within this role, there is potential opportunity to contribute to regular clinical sessions at the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Unit (TIDU) via an Honorary Consultant appointment at the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT).

    You will also participate in teaching and academic supervision on clinical tropical and infectious diseases for the development and delivery of the postgraduate courses and clinical placements we offer at LSTM
    LSTM has an excellent national reputation for its Controlled Human Infection Models research.

    We have an out-patient human challenge facility in place and are currently building a brand new 12 bedded in-patient human challenge unit which will open in early 2025.

    It is a strategic priority to expand the priority pathogens and further build the CHIM research portfolio. Our mission is to develop clinical interventions that improve the health of populations across the world.

    Our largest non-UK partner, the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Clinical Research Programme (MLW ) in Malawi has strong research record in clinical & experimental medicine, population health, antimicrobial resistance, vaccination implementation & impact, infection biology, maternal, neonatal & child health and social sciences.

    Interventions and population research for malaria is focused in the KEMRI-CDC-LSTM collaboration in Kisumu, western Kenya.


    Research:

    Initiate, develop and deliver applied health research in global public health focusing on controlled human infection models (CHIM) of relevance in Low-middle-income countries (LMICs) and to underserved populations in high-income countries (HIC).

    To identify new strategic research opportunities in CHIM studies which have the potential for significant growth and promote engagement and collaboration with both internal and external academics, research organisations, and funders.

    Manage and support on-going applied health research focused on CHIM.

    To create opportunities for, and support, monitor and advance the development of early- and mid-career researchers in CHIM research.

    Contribute to the development, design and implementation of new research projects within the Accelerator Human Challenge Facility.

    Work to ensure the strongest possible institutional submissions to external benchmarking associated with UK government funding, such as the Research Excellence Framework, Knowledge Exchange Framework and Teaching Excellence Framework.


    Learning and Teaching:

    Contribute 15% of time to the development and delivery of teaching and learning activities, postgraduate supervision and assessment of students in line with LSTM's educational strategy.

    Supervise and support Master's and PhD students and provide pastoral care and mentoring to them. Attract PhD students and manage them in accordance with LSTM's policies and procedures.
    To oversee and participate in research degree supervision assessment and examination.
    Comply with all academic quality assurance procedures.

    Support the development and implementation of LSTM's partnership strategy to continue to grow and develop our global strategic partnerships.

    Increase partner representation, diversity and voice within our programmes.
    Doctorate (PhD or MD)
    Registered on GMC Specialist Register in Infectious Diseases or Tropical Medicine (Dual CCT with GIM, IMM, Microbiology, Virology or Pathology will be considered)
    Evidence of established reputation in academic field
    Proven strong record of publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals
    Proven strong record of successfully securing grant funding for CHIM research
    Experience of post graduate teaching and supervision
