    Your role in the team

    Allstate Northern Ireland provides a wide range of IT Services across the Allstate Family of companies and we are excited to be partnering with fellow group member Squaretrade, in standing up a new team to support the company's rapidly growing European growth strategy.

    Squaretrade specializes in extended warranty services for consumer electronics and appliances. The EU Business is experiencing hockey-stick growth and has ambitious goals to be a $500 million business by the end of 2022. The business plans to grow aggressively in the Consumer Electronics category as well as the B2B segment of providing protection plans for small businesses. The Squaretrade Allstate NI Engineering team will play a critical role in supporting the EU business meet its growth targets and contribute to the delivery of key offerings that will facilitate the growth strategy.

    In this role as a Software Engineer Manager, you will manage at least 2 strong scrum teams of both software and quality assurance engineers and be a driving force behind metric driven engineering excellence.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

    Along with being a mentor and a driving force to your teams you will be partnering with Product Owners, DevOps teams, other Software Engineering Managers, a Central Quality Assurance team and an Architecture group to deliver on company initiatives.

    You will report to the Senior Director of Engineering, with whom you will partner on defining the technical vision and direction of each group. This is an exciting position that offers autonomy and teamwork, with opportunities for career development.

    So, what are the essential criteria to apply?

  • Applicants must demonstrate they meet one of the following criteria for employment at Allstate: Must be either a British/Irish Citizen or An EEA national and hold valid settled status or pre settled status or Be a Non-UK/EEA national with UK permanent residency status at the point of offer.
  • Allstate is not providing sponsorship for this vacancy.
  • 5+ years of Object-Oriented development experience.
  • 2+ years hands-on experience of Java, Spring Boot and microservices
  • 2+ years in a formal technical leadership role with evidence of coaching and mentorship activities
  • 1+ years' experience in setting and tracking goals to improve quality and efficiency or contribution to goal setting and measurement.

    • We also have some desirable criteria

    A minimum of 1 year's hands-on experience implementing or supporting solutions that make use of any of the following technologies.

  • One or more Java Testing Frameworks (JUnit, Spock, Cucumber, TestNG, ...)
  • Gradle
  • Mockito
  • Kafka
  • Angular
  • Docker
  • CI/CD
  • Relational Databases (preferably PostgreSQL)
  • Linux or MAC Systems

    • Experience or understanding in one or more of the following:

  • Splunk
  • Sonarqube
  • Contract Testing
  • Test-driven Development
  • Paired-programming
  • Selenium Test Automation
