Research Associate in Modelling Network Data - Cambridge, United Kingdom - University of Cambridge

    Default job background
    Fixed Term
    Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Post-Doc Research Associates to work alongside Dr Paolo Campana in the Institute of Criminology on two new research projects. Each project requires a dedicated Research Associate to play a key role in building networks from large-scale datasets, testing hypotheses and carrying out quantitative analysis.

The two positions available are as follows:

    1) Research Associate in Modelling Network Data (Nuffield Foundation)

Project - Breaking Networks of Youth Serious Violence in the UK funded by the Nuffield Foundation

    2) Research Associate in Modelling Network Data (ESRC)

Project - A Relational Approach to Serious Violence and Co-Offending funded by the ESRC

The overall research aim is to enhance our understanding of the role of networks in the emergence and continuity of violence. The project will leverage large-scale police records to reconstruct networks of cooperation and violence victimisation and identify mechanisms underpinning both phenomena. Fixed term: the funds for this post are available for 15 months in the first instance.

As a Research Associate working on either of these projects, you would independently carry out quantitative network modelling on large-scale datasets. Strong quantitative skills in network analysis are therefore an essential requirement. To excel in this position, you will have strong programming skills, advanced network modelling expertise, and a strong background in quantitative/computational methods. Applicants must have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Social Sciences with a strong quantitative component, or in the border Network Science field including Computer Science, Physics and Public Health (specific requirements are detailed in the Further Particulars). Previous experience of studying crime-related themes, including violence is desirable but not essential.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

    Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £29,605 - £33,966 Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263
