    About Us

    We have an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled individual to join our multi-disciplinary Public Health Division in a senior officer role. This is a rare opening to join the Public Health team within the largest unitary Local Authority in the country and lead work that contributes to Birmingham being a bold city. The Public Health Division is engaged in a dynamic and diverse range of innovative work at a local, regional, national and international level.

    About the Role

    This full-time role based within the Mental Health and Wellbeing team in the Healthy Behaviours and Communities sub-division of Public Health. It will report to the Service Lead Mental Health and Wellbeing and will work with colleagues internally and externally therefore will be expected to forge and maintain strong partnerships. The role will also have line management responsibility for the Programme Officer role.

    The role will lead on the development and delivery of the Suicide Prevention Action Plan and refresh of the 2024 Suicide Prevention Strategy, contribute to the writing of the DPH Annual report on Mental Health and Wellbeing, administer the Suicide Prevention Advisory Group (SPAG), lead on the development of the Schools postvention policy, coordinate the Real Time Suicide Surveillance System (RTSS) and sign-off of the Coronial Audit.

    We are looking for an individual who can make a swift and confident start and join the coproduction of the Birmingham Mentally Healthy City strategy. They should have a good understanding of Public Health priorities and relevant policy environment, demonstrable experience of using data and evidence to underpin health and wellbeing initiatives, experience of successfully developing, commissioning and managing projects, strong written and verbal communication skills and experience in writing reports, project specifications and plans.

    Skills & Experience

    This is an ideal opportunity for somebody who:

  • has substantial experience of working with a wide range of partners and stakeholders in supporting Public Health or Environmental Health outcomes, for example elected members, the commissioners and providers of health and care services, statutory agencies and businesses
  • is able to interact with the diverse communities of Birmingham and is passionate about reducing health inequalities
  • has experience of delivering performance and governance arrangements and developing and implementing improvement programmes in line with agreed priorities
  • has demonstrable knowledge and understanding of Public Health priorities and behavioural science and experience in implementing Implementing and evaluating behavioural change interventions for individuals, communities, and populations.
  • has substantial experience of developing and coordinating the delivery of major projects in complex and challenging environments
  • has experience in developing staff through both formal and informal opportunities
