Head of Communications - London, United Kingdom - Counter Terrorism Policing

    Default job background
    Description

    The role

holder will be responsible for setting CTP's overall communications strategy and then leading a network of skilled communicators across the country to make it a reality. You will have direct responsibility for a team of 25 communicators in CTPHQ, covering all major communications functions, and provide overall direction as Head of Profession to a network of 45 communications staff.

As a member of CTP's national governance and management boards you will provide expertise, counsel and guidance to CTP's senior leadership on all communications matters, and on wider issues of reputation, public confidence and brand. You will also make a wider contribution to CTP's work through active engagement on people issues, by promoting inclusion, diversity and equality and by setting the highest personal and professional standards personally and across CTP Communications.

You will connect CTP Communications at a senior level with partners across policing, government, and the national security community as well as other organisations and bodies that can support CTP's mission.

You will ensure that CTP Communications is innovative and dynamic and able to respond effectively to evolving threats, a challenging external environment and an ever-changing communications landscape. This includes taking a leadership role in response to terrorist attacks and other national security crises.

    Job Requirements

We are looking for a proven senior leader, with extensive experience leading strategic communications for organisations that have a high public profile.

We are looking for an individual who will set a strategic direction for CTP communications work, and then has the professional and personal qualities to lead and deliver on that strategy.

We need someone with excellent strategic judgement who acts with transparency and accountability, preferably with experience of working in a high-profile organisation or business attracting significant media interest.

We need someone who is instinctively attuned to operating – and leading public communications – within a national security environment, often communicating on challenging and highly sensitive issues.

We need an individual with vision, energy and creative flair to lead a high-performing, national network of communicators, who sets high personal standards and motivates others to do the same.

We need someone with experience of the full range of communications functions, so that you can direct a multi-faceted communications network and lead others with authority and empathy.

We are looking for an individual with the interpersonal skills and influence to build relationships and networks of trust across and beyond government, policing and the national security community.

A calm temperament and experience planning for and responding to crises is a real advantage.

    Responsibilities of the Role

The post holder will be required to do the following:

  • To lead CTP Communications activity, by planning, developing and driving forward a national communications strategy that supports key operational and organisational priorities.
  • To coordinate and direct communications activity across the full spectrum of communications disciplines internally and externally.
  • To act as Head of Profession for Communications in CTP and develop the communications profession in CTP.
  • To enhance the reputation of CTP's Communications work internally and externally by demonstrating its impact in keeping the public safe.
  • To contribute to and support national leadership of CTP as a member of CTP and CTPHQ executive and management boards.
  • To protect CTP's brand and reputation by providing strategic advice to senior leaders on any communications, or reputational issues, and on the wider activity of CTP.
  • To ensure CTP's connectivity with policing, government and the national security community by building and sustaining excellent relationships with crucial stakeholders.
  • To build alliances with partner organisations to enhance CTP's communications work and amplify its campaign and critical public safety information.
  • To exercise, plan and improve CTP's, and wider partners', communications response to terrorist attacks and other national security crises.
  • To represent CTP Communications at key, and often sensitive, meetings and forums.
  • To take a national, strategic communications coordination role after terrorist attacks and other national security crises.
  • To act as a champion for people priorities across CTP, including to support CTP's commitment to inclusion, diversity and equality
